What we clarify before you book

"Dog-friendly" is quickly written on a website. The truth is in the details – and those are exactly what we ask the host for you before you book:

How many dogs are allowed?
What does the dog cost per night or per stay?
Is the garden fully fenced?
Do grazing or farm animals live on the property?
Do walking trails start right at the house?
May the dog swim in the stream, pond or lake?
Which house rules apply?

Into the mountains with your dog, relaxed

On alpine trails you will meet cows, sheep or horses. Keep your distance and keep your dog under control – in the alpine summer that means: leash within reach, stay calm, and never let grazing cattle get between you and your dog.

Plan the tour around your dog's fitness, age and the temperature, not your summit ambitions. Always carry water – mountain streams are no reliable substitute.

What to know before you book

Are dogs allowed in all the places shown?

Yes. This page lists only the 14 huts and holiday houses where dogs are expressly welcome – not merely tolerated. The conditions (number, cost, rules) differ per house and are listed on each hut's card.

How many dogs may I bring, and what does it cost?

Each host decides – one or two dogs and a surcharge per night or per stay are typical. The figure is listed on each hut's card; if it is missing, we clarify it with the host before you book.

Are there fenced gardens?

Yes – the Alpenrehblick at the Karwendel has a fully fenced dog garden. At the other houses the range goes from open meadows to alpine pasture settings; each hut's card says what applies.

May my dog swim in the pond or lake?

The Mühlenhütte in the Mostviertel comes with its own private pond where your dog is expressly allowed to swim. At public lakes the local rules apply – many have dedicated dog areas.

Can I walk straight from the hut?

At almost all of them: yes. Most of our dog-friendly huts sit at the forest edge, in seclusion or on the alp – the first walk starts at the front door, not at a car park.

What about grazing animals and wildlife?

In the alpine summer you share the trails with cows, sheep and horses. Keep your distance and your dog under control, especially around mother cows with calves. In Austria, leash or muzzle requirements apply in many places under provincial law – when in doubt, leash on.

Do I need a leash in Austria?

The rules are provincial law and differ by state and municipality. On alps with grazing cattle and in wildlife rest zones, the leash is always the right choice. Your host knows the local rules – just ask.

What if my dog has special needs?

Tell us before you book – whether anxious dog, senior or puppy. We know every house personally and will tell you honestly which one fits. Sometimes the answer is: not this one, but that one.
