The right size, safe surroundings, a good journey and enough freedom for small and big children. No family-trip kitsch – but answers that really help you on site.
01 · Children’s age
Which hut suits which age?
A hut can be wonderful for a family with school children and quite exhausting with a crawling toddler. That is not down to the hut, but to stairs, water, sleeping places and the surroundings.
Stairs & terrain
Check drop-offs, stove, pond and steep paths more closely. Space for free play is worth gold.
Discovering
Animals, water, forest, sledding and easy hiking trails make the surroundings exciting.
Space of their own
Their own room, Wi-Fi or good activities can decide surprisingly much about family harmony.
02 · Equipment
Child-friendly or simply just big?
A big accommodation is not automatically child-friendly. Eight sleeping places help little if there is only one cramped bathroom, a steep ladder and no safe place outside.
Important: “Child-friendly” does not mean the same at every house. Always look at the concrete features and not just the tick.
03 · Type of accommodation
Farm, alpine hut or holiday home?
Animals, hosts and often short distances. In return, working machines, the barn and real farm operations are a normal part of it.
Lots of nature and shared hut life. Check arrival, supplies and simpler equipment closely beforehand.
Usually more comfort, proper heating and a good kitchen. Practical for babies, longer stays and bad-weather days.
The best accommodation is not the most spectacular one. It is the one where your family’s everyday life gets easier on holiday instead of more complicated.
04 · Safety
Stove, water, stairs and grazing animals
A hut is not a sterile hotel corridor. That is exactly what makes it lovely. Still, you should clarify a few points before booking.
That does not mean these accommodations are unsuitable. It only means: the surroundings have to suit your children’s age and your kind of holiday. That is exactly what we are happy to clarify before booking with you and the host.
05 · Out and about
Hiking with children without everyone getting grumpy
Children don’t count in summits and metres of altitude. They count in streams, Jause breaks, animals, climbing spots and the question of when there will be something to eat again.
Family rule: The summit won’t run away. The mood will.
06 · Holiday day
Family holidays without a constant programme
Many parents plan too much because the holiday is supposed to be special. Children often find the woodpile, the stream and the farm dog more exciting than the most expensive excursion destination.
An excursion is fine. It just doesn’t have to start at 8 o’clock every morning. More of this in the 50 small holiday moments.
07 · Preparation
Packing list and travelling with children
The general hut packing list remains your basis. For families, a few things are added that matter depending on age.
Night light, favourite blanket, step stool, carrier or pram suitable for the terrain, medication and a change of clothes.
Rain clothing, sturdy shoes, water bottles, small games, sun protection and some food for the first arrival.
Clarify key handover and the last stretch of the drive beforehand, don’t arrive only after dark, have the first meal with you, plan breaks on mountain roads – and in winter check snow chains and road conditions.
08 · Price
What does a family holiday in a hut cost?
Compare the total price for the whole family. A hut with a kitchen can be cheaper than several hotel rooms, especially if you cook yourselves. But fixed costs weigh more heavily on short stays.
A more expensive house can make more sense if playground, animals, trails and shopping are right on site. Then you save yourselves driving and entrance tickets every day.

From what age does a hut holiday with children make sense?
In an easily reachable and comfortable accommodation it is possible even with a baby. The simpler and more remote the hut, the more important experience and preparation become.
Do we absolutely need a playground?
No. A safe place outside, forest, animals or a short walk to the stream can work just as well. The children’s age is what decides.
Is a hut with a pond suitable for families?
Yes, if you know the access and organise supervision to match. With small children, proximity to water is an important selection point.
What should be kept in mind on a farm?
Farm operations, animals and machines are part of it. Children should know clear rules and not enter the barn or working areas without agreement.
