Summer holidays in Austria: the best places to stay in the Austrian Alps
Tyrol: Innsbruck, Zillertal and Karwendel
Our huts around the Karwendel are half an hour from Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol – the old town, the Nordkette cable car and the castle of Ambras make a lovely day trip. From the Breitberg Alm you reach Mayrhofen and the Zillertal Alps, from the Stubai chalets the glacier. A walking holiday in the Austrian Alps starts here on the network of trails right outside the door.
Salzburg, Carinthia and East Tyrol
Above Bischofshofen in the Salzburgerland our two rustic huts look towards the Hochkönig, Zell am See and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road are a day trip away. In Carinthia the Pietschacher Almhütte sits in the Nockberge, in East Tyrol the Zarze in the Hohe Tauern below the Grossglockner. Lakes and mountains, turquoise water and alpine scenery – Austria in summer at its most picturesque.
Outdoor activities for an active summer
Hiking, mountain biking, a swim in the mountain lake, a cable car up with the summer card, a spa evening in the chalet: summer holidays to Austria are family-friendly and suitable for families with children as much as for couples and hikers. When is the best time for a summer holiday in the mountains?
Every time has its charm: in early summer the alpine pastures bloom, in high summer mountain lakes and higher trails beckon, in September the days become calmer and clearer. Cable cars and managed alpine huts have their own seasons – these are listed with the respective region.
Do we need to be especially sporty for a holiday in the mountains?
A mountain summer works at any pace. Walking paths, alpine pastures, bathing lakes, valley cycle paths and cable cars make it lovely even without a summit programme – and if you want more, the big tours are right next door.
Which hut suits families with children?
Short distances, safe surroundings, enough room and animals or water nearby count more than metres of altitude. Farms with farm animals, holiday apartments with a garden and huts at the forest edge suit especially well.
Can we combine hiking and swimming?
Yes. Many of our regions combine easy hiking trails with bathing lakes, mountain lakes or natural pools – and the Mühlenhütte in the Mostviertel even has its own pond. The distance to the water is listed with every accommodation.
Is cycling possible straight from the hut?
At many houses forest roads, valley cycle paths or mountain bike routes start nearby. Tell us how you ride – we will name the huts where the route matches your skill.
What belongs in the backpack in summer?
Water, sun and rain protection, a warm layer for up high, sturdy shoes, phone, map and a small first-aid kit. With that you are well equipped on most trails around our huts.
