A train station alone says little – what counts is the whole way to the door. Six examples from our selection, from the station in the village to the taxi up the mountain: each hut tells you how to get there.
Train + Walserbus · right to the front doorSix lodges in the Kleinwalsertal
Train to Oberstdorf, then the frequent Walserbus right to the door – the stop is 50 metres from the lodges. Cable cars and ski bus are included with the guest card, the whole valley works car-free. For families often more relaxed than any drive: the children count tunnels, the holiday begins in the carriage.

Station in the village · Inn valley railwayRiedhof, Breitenbach am Inn
Breitenbach am Inn station is in the village, the Inn valley railway comes from Innsbruck and Kufstein. From the station on foot or by taxi to the organic farm with Troadkammer, Roggnkammer and the Zuahaus d'kloane Mühle – farm shop at the house, bus stop 400 metres.

Station in the village · 15 minutes from InnsbruckSonnseitn Karwendel, Fritzens
Fritzens-Wattens station is in the village, from Innsbruck you are there in 15 minutes – then a short walk to the holiday apartment with tiled stove, garden and terrace. The easiest car-free arrival in our selection, with the Karwendel opposite.

Train + taxi · Bauernladl next doorWaldhüttl and Tiroler Hütte, Karwendel
Regional train to Terfens, about 4 kilometres to the two huts on the Umlberg: by pre-booked taxi, by regional or ski bus or, for the sporty, by e-bike. The Bauernladl at the Roanerhof is 100 metres away – farm products instead of supplies in the rucksack.

Mariazellerbahn + taxiMühlenhütte and Abenteurer-Hütte, Mostviertel
By the historic Mariazellerbahn to Schwarzenbach an der Pielach, then taxi to the farm. To the Mühlenhütte it is the last 150 metres across the grass, to the Abenteurer-Hütte 3.5 kilometres on foot or by e-bike – charging is possible down at the host's.

Train + bus · stop 500 mPietschacher Almhütte, Carinthia
Feldkirchen station, then by bus up to the Hochrindl – the stop is 500 metres from the alpine hut at 1,700 metres. You can pre-order farm products, in winter you go straight from the hut onto the piste. The alpine hut for eight, entirely without a car.

How a hut becomes reachable without your own car
Train + bus
To the right station, onward by regional bus, Walserbus or ski bus. From the stop a short, clearly described walk remains – 50 metres in the Kleinwalsertal, 400 metres in Gnadenwald and at the Riedhof.
Train + taxi
Train into the valley, the last section by a pre-booked local taxi up the mountain – Terfens, Schwaz, Hall, Fügen or Schwarzenbach. The contacts come with your personal travel information.
Train + e-bike
For sporty guests: the last climb by e-bike, to the Umlberg or the Abenteurer-Hütte. Check bike transport on the train in advance depending on the connection; on long-distance trains, reserve the bike space early.
Train + on foot
For short remaining distances simply on foot – from the station in the village to the Sonnseitn or the Riedhof, the last 150 metres to the Mühlenhütte. Light luggage and shopping locally make it pleasant.

By electric car, with light luggage and local shopping
The charging station is part of travel planning. The safest option is to charge at a public charging station in the valley or in the last larger town – after that the mountain section begins with enough reserve. We only show charging information at the accommodation when charging type, power, plug type, access, cost and check date are known; a household socket deliberately counts as a fallback with us, not as a charging station. And a hut only gets the train-and-bus label once we have checked the whole chain to the door.
Travel light, shop local. Those who come without a car leave a week's supplies at home: farm shops, Bauernladl and pre-orders from the host make the journey easier and strengthen the region. Better one piece of luggage less, but a light wheeled suitcase and a rucksack per person – the accommodation page tells you what is already at the hut, and the packing list depends on that. In simple huts without bed linen, your own sleeping bag and a pillowcase are often enough; that saves luggage, laundry and transport. A taxi to the starting point is best booked in advance.
Getting around locally. A car-free holiday in Austria also means: how do you get to the excursion destinations locally? In the Kleinwalsertal, in the Hall-Wattens region and in the Zillertal, guest cards take care of that – hiking buses, ski buses and cable cars are included or heavily discounted, with frequent bus connections even in high season. From the Riedhof and the Sonnseitn you take the Inn valley railway to Innsbruck, Schwaz or Kufstein without changing; in the Pielachtal the Mariazellerbahn is the excursion itself. So the car-free holiday stays environmentally friendly and relaxed on site too – short walks, bus and train instead of hunting for parking, and a summer holiday where public transport simply belongs.

A holiday in Austria without a car: how train, bus and cable car get you to the hut
Austria without a car – it works
Austria is one of the easiest destinations in Europe for a holiday without a car: the Railjet and the Nightjet of the Austrian Federal Railways bring you from Vienna, Munich or Zurich to the valley, the S-Bahn and the regional buses take over from there. A direct train to Innsbruck, Jenbach or Bischofshofen, then bus or train to the village – and the last stretch to the hut by hiking taxi, host pick-up or on foot. Stress-free travel that starts on the platform.
Public transport free of charge with the guest card
In many regions the guest card makes bus and train connections free of charge: in the Kleinwalsertal the buses and cable cars are included with our lodges, in the Silberregion Karwendel the hiking bus, in the Zillertal the regional trains. A day trip to Innsbruck or Zell am See, a cable car up to the hiking trails, bike hire or e-bikes in the valley – you explore the surroundings without your car, even in winter.

Is every hut fully reachable by bus and train?
You reach every hut on this page without your own car – the last section differs: bus to the door, a pre-booked taxi, the e-bike or a short walk. Every accommodation page shows the actual way to the door.
Do I get the phone number of a local taxi?
Yes. With your personal travel information after booking you receive the right train station, bus stop, local taxi contacts and notes on the last stretch.
Can I take an e-bike on the train?
Usually yes – depending on the train with a bike ticket, reservation and limited spaces. On long-distance trains it is best to reserve the bike space early; regional trains in Tyrol generally take bikes.
How do I transport luggage and food?
Pack light, pre-book a taxi to the starting point and shop locally on site: farm shops, Bauernladl and pre-ordering from the host are available at most of our huts.
Can I also arrive without a car in winter?
Yes, at selected accommodation – in the Kleinwalsertal with the Walserbus, in the Hall-Wattens region with regional and ski buses, on the Hochrindl with the bus from Feldkirchen. Timetables and taxis vary by season, which is why you receive up-to-date travel information for your dates.
Are there charging stations for electric cars at the huts?
The safest option is to charge at a public charging station in the valley before the mountain section begins. We only show charging points at the accommodation when charging type, power, plug type, access and cost have been checked – for example near the Grafenhäusl and the Tiroler Hütte at the Karwendel.
