02 · HOW TO CHOOSE
Ski chalet, log cabin or mountain hut?
The three words get used for the same thing, and the difference matters more than it sounds. A ski chalet in the Austrian sense is a whole house with a kitchen, usually within a short drive of the lifts. A log cabin in Austria is smaller and older, often timber throughout, and the charm is precisely that it was not built for tourism. A mountain hut sits higher, sometimes with the last stretch on foot – wonderful in March, a decision in January.
Where they are
Stubai Valley, Tyrol. Chalet Calm and Chalet Dream sit in Neustift, 2 km from the Elferbahnen and 16 km from the Stubai Glacier, which holds snow into spring. This is the pair to pick if you want a ski room, underfloor comfort and a spa after the last run. Chalet Calm · Chalet Dream
Ski amadé, Salzburg
The Oberbrixen Hut and Berghütte Artlieb both sit above Bischofshofen, 13 km from Mühlbach–Hochkönig: 120 km of pistes, 33 lifts, and the rest of Ski amadé within reach. Both have 120 m², both take dogs, and both have hot water outside – a hot pot at Artlieb, a hot pot and a sauna barrel at Oberbrixen.
Karwendel and the Tuxer Alps
Two smaller places for people who would rather toboggan than queue. The Tiroler Hütte am Karwendel is a chalet for two with a private hot tub, 1 km from the Umlberg toboggan run and 12 km from North Tyrol’s longest run at the Kellerjoch. The Kochhäusl is the quiet one: a small family lift on the Wattenberg, a private sauna, and the last few metres on foot.
Booked directly with us
There is no booking platform between you and the owner. You write, we answer – and we have stayed in each of these houses ourselves, so the answer about the access road in February is a real one rather than a line from a brochure.

Frequently asked questions about ski chalets in Austria
What exactly is a ski chalet in Austria?
In Britain the word usually means a catered chalet in a big resort. Here it means something quieter: a house or a hut you rent whole, self-catering, with a ski area nearby rather than a lift queue outside the window. Ours sleep two to seven people, and there is no host in the building.
Which of your chalets is closest to a ski area?
Chalet Calm and Chalet Dream in the Stubai Valley – the Elferbahnen lifts in Neustift are 2 km away and the Stubai Glacier 16 km. In the Salzburg region, the Oberbrixen Hut and Berghütte Artlieb are both 13 km from Mühlbach–Hochkönig with its 120 km of pistes.
Do the chalets have somewhere to put skis and boots?
Chalet Calm and Chalet Dream have a proper ski room at the building, together with private parking and an EV charger. At the huts you dry your kit by the stove – which, honestly, works just as well for a family.
Is there a ski chalet for just two people?
The Tiroler Hütte am Karwendel. Swiss stone pine, a private hot tub, the Umlberg toboggan run 1 km away. It sleeps two and nobody else – we do not squeeze a third bed in.
Can we bring a dog?
To the Oberbrixen Hut and Berghütte Artlieb, yes. The two Stubai chalets do not take dogs. If the dog is the deciding factor, start on our dog page rather than here.
When should we book for winter?
Earlier than feels necessary. Each of these is a single house, not a hotel with sixty rooms – Christmas, New Year and the February half term are usually gone months ahead. Write to us directly, we answer ourselves.
