What really makes a family hut
Many beds alone do not make a good family hut. What matters is the age of the children, the surroundings, the layout of the house and the things that make your everyday life easier. We look at the houses ourselves and write down what we saw – including the pond, steep stairs and grazing livestock.

Children's age
Beds, stairs and paths have to suit the age. A cot in the house, a bedroom next to the parents' and a path to the hut that a child can manage alone.

Outdoors & safety
Stream, pond, slope, stove, access road and animals on the farm. For some the reason to come, for others with a toddler a reason to rule it out. Both are stated with every accommodation.

Equipment
Cot, high chair, washing machine, a kitchen for real cooking and rooms that can be divided sensibly. What is missing, many hosts still have in the house – just ask.

Location and everyday life
Hiking trails, toboggan run, bathing lake and shopping within easy reach. A hut you can set off from on foot saves a car journey every day of the family holiday.

Your day, your pace
Breakfast when everyone is awake. Stay outside as long as it is exciting. No buffet where a two-year-old is supposed to sit still, and no dinner at a time that does not fit nap time. You have your accommodation to yourselves and set your own rhythm.
You cook yourselves, with what the farm next door provides: milk, eggs, Speck, bread. Children set the table and explore the surroundings at their own pace in between – what is in season is shown by the Seasonal calendar, recipes are in the food collection, and if you run out of ideas, we have collected 50 activities around the hut . In the evening everyone sits at one table: children, parents and grandparents.

Which hut suits which age?
Between baby age and teenagers there are worlds of difference in a hut holiday. What is the best thing about the house for some is the spot where you constantly have to watch out for others.
0 to 3 years
Baby & toddler
Level paths, a cot in the house, secured stairs and a plot without a steep slope. A stream is lovely but needs supervision. Animals to look at are enough of a programme.
4 to 8 years
Room to explore
Now the surroundings of the hut quickly become an adventure playground. Animals to feed, a meadow, a stream to dam, short hikes with a destination. Children need no programme here, just room and time.
9 to 12 years
Do more yourself
Longer tours, cycling, sledding, swimming in the mountain lake and first explorations of their own around the house. Now a location you can set off from without a car pays off.
From 13 years
Teenagers
A retreat of their own, usable Wi-Fi and sport nearby – bike park, via ferrata, piste. Larger houses with several bedrooms work best.

A family holiday in Austria in your own hut, holiday home or farm apartment is family-friendly by nature: no childcare programme, no buffet times, but the meadow at the door, the animals on the farm and a kitchen for the little ones' favourite dinner. Our family huts in Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia and Lower Austria are personally visited – and what suits which age is stated honestly.
Outdoor activities for young and old
The summer family holiday in Austria writes itself: an active day with a hike to the alpine pasture, a bike ride along the valley cycle path, a splash in the mountain lakes, themed trails and play areas at the cable car mountain stations, a leisurely excursion to Innsbruck or the Grossglockner. Kid-friendly, with different difficulty levels – children and parents find their pace.
Winter: ski, sled and relax
In winter the same family huts are close to the ski resorts of the Zillertal, the Karwendel and the Salzburger Land: the children learn to ski, the sled run is outside the door, and in the evening everyone relaxes by the wood stove. Which huts are especially suitable for families?
Accommodations with a suitable bed layout, enough living space, a usable kitchen and a location that suits the age of your children. Many beds alone are not enough.
What does “child-friendly” mean with you?
Depending on the house, this can include a cot, high chair, playground, animals on the farm or especially suitable surroundings. The specific features are listed with the accommodation.
Is there a cot and high chair in the hut?
That depends on the host and is noted with every accommodation under amenities. If neither is listed, ask before booking – many hosts have a travel cot or a high chair in the house even if it is not in the description. Bedding for a cot is usually brought along yourselves.
What do we need to watch out for with water, stove and stairs?
Stream, pond, open fireplace, wood stove, steep stairs and grazing livestock are listed in our description – even if they do not suit every family. With small children it is worth looking at this before booking: some things can be solved with a gate or supervision, others speak against a particular house. If in doubt, ask – we know the houses.
What does a family holiday in a hut cost?
The price depends on size, amenities, region and travel time. A hut is rented as a whole, not per person – for families that is often cheaper than several hotel rooms. Extras such as final cleaning, wood or electricity and the local tourist tax are added; how children are counted for the tourist tax is decided by each municipality. All amounts are listed in the accommodation's price overview before booking.
How do we find the right hut for the age of our children?
Filter the hut list by “child-friendly” and look at location and layout: with a baby or toddler, level paths, a cot in the house and secured stairs; from four, animals, meadow and stream; from nine, trails you can reach without a car. Or write to us with the age of your children – then we search with you.
