01 · Plain talk

The mountains give freedom – a good plan makes it enjoyable

The mountains are a great holiday destination: trails are marked, tours can be planned and almost every activity can be adapted to your own ability. The decisive difference lies between “Let’s just see what happens” and “We know what we’re doing today”.

The Austrian Alpenverein (Alpine Club) recommends, among other things, careful planning, realistic self-assessment, complete equipment, suitable footwear and a pace at which nobody gets out of breath. That is exactly common sense – and it makes the holiday easier, not harder.

The most important sentence: It's not the biggest possible tour that makes a holiday day valuable, but a tour from which everyone comes back well.

02 · The starting point

A suitable accommodation makes many things easier

The best hut isn't automatically the most remote one. For a relaxed stay, what counts are accessibility, trails, supplies and the question of how well the place suits your group.

Honest details are more important than a spectacular headline. If you know beforehand what to expect, you enjoy it all the more on site – that's exactly why we describe our accommodations as they are.

03 · Hiking

Hiking without unnecessary ambition

A tour fits when length, metres of altitude, trail condition and weather suit the whole group – not just the strongest person. That leaves enough energy for the Jause (snack), the view and the next day.

Turning back is not a failed summit day. It's a good decision that preserves your next holiday day.

04 · Mountain and swimming lakes

Swimming is part of the mountain summer

A mountain lake is wonderfully refreshing, a swimming lake pleasantly warm and a private pond is yours alone during the holiday. The usual swimming rules apply as everywhere – even in front of the most beautiful scenery.

A private pond is your place, not a supervised swimming pool: supervising children remains the adults' job. With this one thought, the pond becomes the favourite spot of the holiday.

05 · Cycling & bike

The right route is more important than the strongest bike

A valley cycle path, a forest road and a technical trail are three different things – and all three can make a great holiday day. Choose the route according to riding ability, fitness and surface.

A helmet is not mandatory everywhere for adults in Austria – it's a good companion nonetheless. Separate helmet requirements apply to children.

06 · Weather, heat & thunderstorms

The weather forecast is as much part of the tour as the shoes

Mountain weather is livelier than the weather in the valley – that's exactly what makes the mountains what they are. If you briefly check the forecast in the morning and plan the day flexibly, you get a good holiday day out of any weather.

With a thunderstorm warning, the summit is not a sensible meeting point – but the swimming lake in the morning or the terrace in the afternoon is. Starting early often helps; hot days have their own pleasant solution in the mountains: To the magazine “Escaping the heat”

07 · With children

The slowest person sets the day – and that's a good thing

Children need different trails, different breaks and often different destinations than adults. A stream, animals or an alpine pasture (Alm) are usually more exciting than an abstract summit number – and that's exactly what the best holiday memories are made of.

The summit won't run away. The mood usually will.

08 · Alone or together

The right decision looks different depending on the travel group

Travelling alone means: more freedom and more personal responsibility. Briefly share your route and return time, charge your phone, don't count on reception – then the mountain is yours for a day.

In a group the rule is: nobody gets dragged along. Pace, tour and breaks follow the person with the smallest reserves, and the group stays together. Families also benefit from briefly clarifying in the morning: what do we really want today – and what do we deliberately leave out?

09 · Good to know

In Austria, help is only a phone call away

If something does happen: stay calm, check whether the surroundings are safe, give first aid within your own abilities and dial the emergency number. Describe what happened, where you are and how many people are affected – the control centre guides you through everything else.

Frequently asked questions about mountain holidays

Can I rely completely on a hiking app?

Apps are wonderful for planning and orientation. An offline map and your own judgement are still part of it – battery, reception and conditions can change along the way.

Are trainers enough for easy trails?

On easy, dry trails, sturdy casual shoes can be enough. As soon as it gets steep, wet, stony or longer, well-fitting hiking boots are the more comfortable and safer choice.

May children play by the pond alone?

Small children are always supervised by the water – even at shallow or private waters. That way the pond stays what it should be: the highlight of the holiday.

Do adults have to wear a helmet when cycling?

The legal obligation depends on age and situation. Regardless of that, a well-fitting helmet is a sensible companion – separate helmet requirements apply to children.

What is the most important rule for a good mountain day?

Choose the activity so it suits the group and the current conditions. If you keep reserves, you'll still have fun the next day.

Well prepared? Then the holiday is allowed to feel easy.

Now all that's missing is an accommodation that suits your travel group and your plans.
