In midwinter most people ask how far it is to the lift. In Advent that is rarely the point. What counts is a stove that really heats, a table everyone fits around, and an access road that still works after fresh snow.
Because the days are short you spend far more time indoors than in summer or in the ski season. A hut that is cosy for two can feel cramped for six – and a big room without a stove feels chilly in December. Ask us before you book.
Innsbruck, Salzburg and Hall run large markets every day in December, and you can feel it every weekend. The village markets in the side valleys often open on single days only. That is exactly what makes them calm.
Six markets near usIf you can choose, go midweek or right at opening. The hour before dusk is the loveliest and the emptiest at the same time.

Stay longer and you save half the journey and actually arrive in the valley. Advent makes that easy: the huts are still free and often cheaper than over the holidays.

To the foodIn Austria situational winter equipment rules apply in this period: in wintry conditions your car needs winter tyres or chains. December always counts, even if the valley still looks green.
Read the winter guideAt some huts you leave the car in the valley and the host collects you by tractor or snow groomer. It says so on every hut page – allow time and pack so you can carry it.

The first Sunday of Advent falls on 29 November 2026, Christmas Eve on 24 December. As a holiday period we mean the four weeks up to 23 December.

That cannot be promised in advance. Higher huts often have snow already, the valleys frequently do not. We tell you honestly how it looks at the hut you are considering.
Yes. For many people that is the appeal: short days, quiet paths, long evenings. The market is a bonus, not the reason.
Three to seven nights. Shorter rarely justifies the journey, longer works well in Advent because minimum stays are shorter than over the holidays.
