The Nockberge – round summits instead of rock
The Nocken are grassy right to the top: alpine meadows reach above the treeline, the trails run at 1,700 to 2,400 metres, and there is no climbing anywhere. The Nockberge Biosphere Reserve protects this cultural landscape along with its working alpine huts. The Nockalmstraße runs through the middle of it, a panorama road with alps, viewpoints and walking car parks along its whole length.

Warm lakes for long summer days
Carinthia is the state of bathing lakes: the Wörthersee, the Millstätter See, the Ossiacher See and the Weissensee turn pleasantly warm in summer and invite you to swim into September. Velden and Klagenfurt lie on the Wörthersee, and the Weissensee is ringed by mountain forest and especially clear. None of them is far from the Nockberge – mountain in the morning, water in the afternoon.

The Hohe Tauern, the Grossglockner and the Mölltal
In western Carinthia the Hohe Tauern National Park begins, with the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain. From Heiligenblut the Grossglockner high alpine road leads up to the Pasterze glacier, and in the Mölltal the Mölltal glacier awaits. If you want to see the great mountain world, plan a whole day for it – and come back in the evening to the clear air of the alp.

Castles, cathedrals and towns
Hochosterwitz Castle stands on a rock above the Zollfeld, and the way up passes through fourteen gates. In the Gurktal stands Gurk Cathedral with its crypt of a hundred columns. Klagenfurt with its dragon and Minimundus, and Villach on the Drau, are easily done in an afternoon – fine destinations when the weather on the mountain turns grey.

Kasnudeln, Brettljause and farm shops
The Carinthian Kasnudel with curd cheese and mint belongs on every menu, along with a Brettljause of alpine cheese and bacon and the sweet Reindling. Around Sirnitz and in the Gurktal, farms sell straight from the yard. Since you cook for yourselves at the hut, it is worth doing the first shop in the valley – and in the evening the wood stove does the rest.

Winter on the alp
The Hochrindl is a family ski area with short distances and practice slopes, and the Turracher Höhe and Bad Kleinkirchheim lie nearby. Add toboggan runs, ski tours across the alpine meadows and winter walking trails through the snow. In winter the Weissensee becomes the largest natural ice surface in Europe – skating under the open sky, when the ice holds.

How to reach Carinthia
TRAIN
To Feldkirchen or St. Veit
From there a bus or transfer takes you up to the Hochrindl; Feldkirchen station lies around 26 kilometres away.
CAR
Via the Tauern or Süd motorway
About 45 minutes from Villach, around two hours from Salzburg. The road up to the Hochrindl is open all year.
ON SITE
Short distances in the hamlet
On the Hochrindl the distances are short and there is little traffic – the bus stop lies 500 metres from the hut.
