From the Danube and the vineyard terraces of the Wachau, through the Waldviertel and the Vienna Woods, to the foothills of the Mostviertel – a land of abbeys, castles, small railways and pear trees. Our two huts stand in the Pielachtal above Schwarzenbach: one at its own pond with a historic water wheel, one high on the Geissenberg for two, entirely without electricity. Two very different houses in the Pielachtal: the Mühlenhütte at its private pond for up to five people, and the adventurer's hut on the Geissenberg for two, without electricity and standing on its own. Both visited in person, and dogs are welcome at both.

The foothills begin right behind the Pielachtal: the Ötscher with the Ötschergräben is the best-known walking destination of the Mostviertel, and further east the Rax and the Schneeberg rise in the Vienna Alps – at 2,076 metres the Schneeberg is the highest mountain in Lower Austria. Between them lie Annaberg, the Muckenkogel near Lilienfeld and climbing gardens in the limestone walls.

Rivers, valleys and small railways
The Pielach, the Erlauf and the Ybbs cut the valleys of the Mostviertel, in the north the Thaya runs through the Waldviertel, and in the east the Danube passes the Wachau. The Mariazellerbahn runs from St. Pölten through the Pielachtal via Frankenfels all the way to Mariazell, and the Ybbstalbahn rolls to Göstling an der Ybbs – outings for which you can leave the car standing.

Abbeys, castles and the Wachau
Melk Abbey stands above the Danube, Göttweig Abbey on the opposite bank, along with Rappottenstein Castle in the Waldviertel and the Aggstein ruin high above the river. The Wachau between Melk and Krems is a World Heritage site: vineyard terraces, apricot orchards and villages such as Dürnstein and Spitz, all within reach of a day trip.

Cider, cornelian cherries and apricots
The Mostviertel is the largest pear-tree region in Europe – in spring 200,000 trees blossom, and in autumn the pear cider goes into the glasses. Add the Dirndl, the cornelian cherry of the Pielachtal, and apricots from the Wachau. Cider taverns, farm shops and the farmers markets in Frankenfels and Kirchberg supply everything you need at the hut.

Westbahn and Mariazellerbahn
By Westbahn to St. Pölten, then with the Mariazellerbahn through the Pielachtal to Schwarzenbach an der Pielach – around ten kilometres from the huts.
TAXI
From the station to the hut
From Schwarzenbach station a taxi takes you up; for the adventurer's hut the last stretch also works by mountain bike or e-bike.
CAR
Via St. Pölten into the valley
From Vienna you are there in a good hour. To the Mühlenhütte it is 150 metres on foot from the car park.
