Silberregion Karwendel
Holidays in the Silberregion Karwendel
The Karwendel mountains, the silver town of Schwaz and small villages in the Inntal – natural destinations, family outings, culture and bathing lakes lie close together here.
Briefly explained
What can you do in the Silberregion Karwendel?
The Silberregion Karwendel links the Karwendel mountains, the silver town of Schwaz and smaller villages in the Inntal. Here natural destinations, family outings, culture and bathing lakes lie close together.
You can hike through the Wolfsklamm, ride the mine train into the silver mine, visit Schloss Tratzberg, stay at the Badesee Weißlahn or make a day trip to the Achensee. Each destination below has a link to the official provider and a route planner – also handy once you are already there.
Nature & hiking
Outside there is enough for many days
Four trails we like to walk ourselves – with an honest note on who they suit.
Wolfsklamm
Wooden walkways, steps, waterfalls and the path up to St. Georgenberg. Exciting for children if they walk securely on steps and damp wood.
Hinterhornalm and Walderalm
The Alm hike right in the region: from Gnadenwald up to the Hinterhornalm and on to the Walderalm – with a view of the Karwendel and a real refreshment stop. For many of our guests the most beautiful half-day.
Suspension bridge loop Kolsassberg
A leisurely loop with a tingle on the bridge – easy to walk with children, and quickly doable again after rain.
Ruine Rettenberg
Between Kolsass and Kolsassberg the old walls stand right by the path – a short detour that combines well with the suspension bridge loop. Old stories surround the ruin: a farmer is said to have found his lost flock of sheep here and heard a voice that did not mean well with him. It tells better when you are standing in front of it.
Ganalm in the Vomperloch
A lonely Alm in the wild Vomperloch – for days when you do not want to meet anyone. Sturdy shoes and sure-footedness are part of it.
Family & culture
Some destinations may be a holiday day of their own
The detailed information stays with the official bodies – we tell you honestly what is worthwhile for whom.
Schloss Tratzberg
Originally furnished rooms, stories from several centuries and a dedicated children’s tour. The Tratzberg-Express makes the way up from the car park to the castle easier.
Schwaz silver mine
The mine train takes you into the mountain. The guided tour shows how silver mining shaped Schwaz and the whole region. Inside it is about 12 degrees all year round – take a jacket.
Swarovski Kristallwelten
Glittering chambers of wonder, a large play tower and the garden with the giant. Come early at the weekend, then it is quieter.
Haus steht Kopf & Tirolland
Two destinations for children who want something other than hiking today – easy to combine with the bathing lake next door.
Summits
If today may be a summit day
Up with the Kellerjochbahn
In two sections up to the panorama over the Inntal – at the top a barbecue area, a chapel and the view as far as the Karwendel await. A good day even for non-summiteers.
Lamsenspitze, Kellerjoch and Gilfert
Three real summit destinations for experienced walkers – with a hut stop and a long view. Start early and take the weather forecast seriously.
Our Alm tip for the whole area
Up to the Blaubergalm
Some Alms smarten themselves up – the Blaubergalm has simply stayed as it is. Up in the Blauberge in the Achental you sit on the wooden bench, inside real cooking is still done, and the Brettljause tastes the way it should after a few hours on a mountain path: original, rustic and honestly good. The Alm is also a rewarding destination by mountain bike or e-bike from Achenwald – pedal up, stop in, roll out.
„When guests from the Silberregion, from Hall-Wattens or from the Achensee ask us about a real Alm, we recommend the Blaubergalm. It is worth the way."

Bike
Off by bike – and back with a good feeling
Cycle to the Badesee Weißlahn
A leisurely valley loop with a reward at the end: lake, meadow, kiosk. Also easily doable with a bike trailer.
Along the Inn to Schloss Tratzberg
Flat along the Inn right up to the castle gate – combines well with a guided tour.
Walderalm and Hinterhornalm
Uphill with views and a refreshment stop – the classic tour of the region. With an e-bike also for leisure riders.
Lakes
An afternoon by the water is almost always possible
Badesee Weißlahn
The family lake of the region: shallow entry, sunbathing lawn, kiosk. Come early on hot weekends – the lawn fills up.
Day trip to the Achensee
Tyrol’s largest lake, half an hour away – shore paths, boat trips and a grand mountain backdrop. With the Achenseebahn even the journey there becomes an experience.
Winter
When winter begins outside the hut
Skiing on the Kellerjoch
A small, fine ski area without waiting times – ideal for families and leisure skiers. If you like the big circus, drive on to the Zillertal.
Tobogganing and winter hiking
Natural toboggan runs and tracked winter paths – winter works here even without skis.
Cross-country skiing and snowshoe hiking
Quiet cross-country trails in the valley, snowshoe routes on the mountain – winter at your own pace.

Stopping in: our inn tips
If nobody wants to cook today – four houses where we like to sit ourselves.
Farming in the Silberregion Karwendel
Much of what looks like untouched nature here was made by hand. The difference between Alm and Bergmahd explains almost the whole landscape.
- Alm, Alpe, BergmahdThe same, something different – and the most widespread misconception about the tree line.
- Why good paths help everyoneWho builds and maintains Alm paths – and why barriers are a question of liability.
In between
Today we simply stay at the hut.
That too is a good day in the Silberregion: stove on, book open, Jause on the table. If you are still looking for a place like that – here are our accommodations in the region.
