You can set off on a hike straight from a hut, spend the afternoon at a bathing lake, visit a castle or an old town and in the evening put regional produce on the table in your own accommodation.

Hohe Tauern, alpine valleys and a mountain cuisine of its own

What shapes the region: The Hohe Tauern national park region, the Lienzer Dolomiten, Hochpustertal and Defereggental – plus the town of Lienz, museums, castles and villages with living tradition.

What to experience: Vast mountain landscapes, quiet alpine valleys and small villages away from the bustle.

What shapes the region: Lake Constance, gentle hills and high alpine landscape lie unusually close together – plus modern timber architecture, craftsmanship, the Bregenzer Festspiele and Walser culture.

What to experience: Swimming in Lake Constance, mountain villages, alpine hikes and culture from the village to the lake stage.

How it tastes: Mountain and alpine cheese, Käsknöpfle, Riebel and Montafoner Sura Kees – much of it from small dairies.

What shapes the region: High mountains, working alpine pastures, waterfalls and gorges – plus castles, palaces and the cultural city of Salzburg with Mozart and the Festspiele.

What to experience: Alpine pasture summer, hiking trails and huts in the Pongau, with culture in town and country in between.

How it tastes: Pinzgauer Kasnocken, Salzburger Nockerl, farmhouse bread, cheese, Brettljause and home-distilled spirits from the alpine pastures.

Kärnten

Lakes, the Nockberge and a cuisine between the Alps and the south

What shapes the region: Mountains and alpine pastures meet numerous lakes; in the Nockberge the heights are gentler, and by the water the summer is long.

What to experience: Swimming, paddling and quiet afternoons by the lake – plus castles, palaces, abbeys, music and summer theatre.

How it tastes: Kasnudeln, Kärntner Reindling, Brettljause, Ritschert and fish from lakes and rivers – Slow Food and farm shops included.

Niederösterreich

Danube, forest, wine and small valleys

What shapes the region: From the Danube and the wine landscapes of the Wachau via the Waldviertel and the Wienerwald to the alpine Mostviertel – with castles, abbeys and small railway lines.

What to experience: Wine and river landscapes, nature parks, cycle paths and a ride on the Mariazellerbahn.

How it tastes: Wachau apricots and wine, Waldviertel poppy seed, potatoes and carp, Most and the Dirndl fruit from the Pielachtal.

Steiermark

Forest, alpine pastures, beer and the green heart of Austria

What shapes the region: More than half of the state is forest: the stone pine country around Murau, the Dachstein in the north-west, apple and wine hills towards the south – and Graz in between.

What to experience: Alpine pasture hikes and stone pine forests, the steam trains of the Murtalbahn, the Grüner See and ski days on the Kreischberg.

How it tastes: Pumpkin seed oil, runner beans, alpine cheese and Brettljause – plus Murauer beer and Styrian wine.

Oberösterreich

Lakes, the Danube and the Salzkammergut

What shapes the region: The Salzkammergut with Traunsee, Attersee and Hallstatt, the Danube with the Schlögener Schlinge and the quiet granite hills of the Mühlviertel.

What to experience: Bathing lakes and boat trips, the Salzwelten, the Danube cycle path and modern museums in Linz.

How it tastes: Knödel in all variations, Most from the orchards, beer from small breweries and Linzer Torte.

Sun, Lake Neusiedl and wine

What shapes the region: Austria’s sunny east: the shallow, warm Neusiedler See with its reed belt and storks, wine hills and cellar lanes down into the Südburgenland.

What to experience: Cycle tours around the lake, sailing, Burg Forchtenstein, the Seefestspiele and days at the thermal baths.

How it tastes: Blaufränkisch and Uhudler, Pannonian cooking with paprika and, in autumn, the Gansl at the Heuriger.

Which regions can be reached by train and bus?

Many: Tirol via the Inntal (e.g. Jenbach, Schwaz), the Pielachtal with the Mariazellerbahn, the Pongau via Bischofshofen. With every accommodation we tell you how the last stretch works.

How do I find regional farm shops and markets?

On every holiday region page we show real farm shops, farmers’ shops and markets with a route – for example the Schwazer Bauernmarkt in the Silberregion Karwendel.
