A mountain holiday in Austria – region by region
Six regions in the Austrian Alps and their foothills, where we have seen every hut ourselves: high summits and alpine pastures in Tyrol and East Tyrol, gorges and ski areas in the Salzburger Land, mountain lakes and the Nockberge in Carinthia, lodges in the Kleinwalsertal, forest and a pond in the Mostviertel. If you already know roughly where you want to go, the region is the quickest way to the right place to stay.

Five holiday regions
Most of our huts stand here – from an alpine hut in the Zillertal to a chalet with a hot tub by the Karwendel, with a station in the Inn valley and Innsbruck half an hour away.
Six lodges in Mittelberg at 1,100 metres – the Walserbus stops at the door, in summer the cable cars are included, and the ski area and walking trails start at the house.
Huts with a sauna and a hot pot above Bischofshofen – the Liechtensteinklamm, Hohenwerfen Castle and Ski amadé at the door, with a railjet stop in the village.

What helps you pick a region – short and honest.

West or east?
In the west – the Kleinwalsertal, Tyrol, the Salzburger Land – the mountains are higher, the cable cars closer and the ski areas larger; on the Hintertux glacier you can ski all year. In the east lie forest, pond and hills in the Mostviertel, and the journey from Vienna is short.

Alp or valley?
Alpine huts sit above 1,000 metres with an open view and clear mountain air; in winter they are often reached only on foot or with snowshoes – and then you have the place to yourselves. Huts in the valley have a drive right to the door, a station nearby and a walking trail, cross-country loop or toboggan run outside the house.

Summer or winter?
In summer it is walking trails, via ferratas, mountain bike tours and mountain lakes – Lake Achensee, the Weisslahn bathing lake by the Karwendel, Lake Reintalersee in the Alpbachtal, the pond outside the Mühlenhütte. In winter, skiing, cross-country, tobogganing and a stop at an alpine inn come on top – every region has both.

Where we are not yet
We will show Styria, the Salzkammergut and Burgenland as soon as we have seen a hut there ourselves. Until then we would rather name the regions we really know – family-friendly, quiet, and with honest details for every place.
