Renting a holiday house in Austria – what ours have in common
A holiday house is not a flat with a garden and not a hotel room with a kitchenette. It is a house you rent as a whole. Four things ours have in common.
Room for 6 to 12 people
Every house has between 100 and 120 m² and room for at least six. Two take the big group: the Breitberg Alm above the Zillertal with five rooms and three bedrooms for ten, and the Grafenhäusl by the Karwendel nature park with eight rooms, five bedrooms and two bathrooms for up to twelve, at 870 m. For a middle-sized group there is the Alpenrehblick above Vomp for seven and the Pietschacher Almhütte on the Hochrindl for eight; for six, the Berghütte Artlieb and the Oberbrixen Hütte in the SalzburgerLand – ideal for families and groups who want one table for everyone.
Sauna, hot pot and a tiled stove
Two houses have their own sauna: the Alpenrehblick in the Karwendel nature park and the Pietschacher Almhütte in the Nockberge biosphere park. The two houses in Bischofshofen have a sauna barrel and a hot pot in the garden – warm water under the open sky with the Hochkönig in view. On top of that, almost every house has a tiled stove or a wood stove: cosy in the evening, dependable in winter.
Old houses that are still standing
Two houses are old enough that you feel it as you step in. The Berghütte Artlieb in Bischofshofen has 420 years behind it, the Oberbrixen Hütte around 250. Both stayed lived-in rather than turning into museums – thick walls, wood dry for generations, and today’s comfort with a modern kitchen, bathroom and Wi-Fi. That combination of an old house and present-day comfort is the one our guests like best.
Access, train and winter – described honestly
With every house it says how you get there: by car right to the door, by train and bus as far as the valley, in winter with winter tyres and sometimes chains. We have driven every access road ourselves and tell you before you book what to expect on a snowy road. Our houses cover three regions of the Austrian Alps – each destination with its own mountain landscape, from the Kitzbühel Alps to the Hohe Tauern national park. The Zillertal and the Karwendel are the favourites; the Tyrolean houses are the ones our guests ask for most. If you are after room and quiet, you will find both in the houses that stand on their own: places to withdraw to in the literal sense, the nearest neighbour out of calling distance, the mountains part of the plot.

The Breitberg Alm stands at 1,100 metres on the Fügenberg, in winter with the Hochzillertal ski area just below and the Kitzbühel Alps opposite. The Grafenhäusl and the Alpenrehblick sit by the Karwendel nature park – from either you are in Innsbruck in a good half hour. From the living room of the Alpenrehblick you see deer on the meadow, the Karwendel opposite and the Inn valley below.

Both houses stand on their own above Bischofshofen, both with a sauna barrel and a hot pot in the garden, both for six people, and dogs are welcome at both. The Hochkönig in view, the ski areas of the Pongau outside the door, Salzburg and the Hohe Tauern national park with the Grossglockner High Alpine Road as a day trip – a winter holiday and a mountain summer in the same house.

On the Hochrindl stands the Pietschacher Almhütte, in the alpine world of the Gurktal Alps, in the Nockberge biosphere park. 100 m² for eight, its own sauna, meadow and forest behind the house – and in winter a small ski area with groomed pistes right behind it: skiing from the front door. A place to withdraw to for anyone who likes it quiet.
