Alpine huts and mountain cabins · Tyrol, East Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia, Mostviertel

Rent an alpine hut or mountain cabin – a hut that is yours for a few days

Renting a mountain cabin means, with us: for the length of your stay the house belongs to you alone – a wood stove, a bench outside the door, the mountains part of the plot. Our huts stand on their own in the Tuxer Alps, by the Karwendel, in the Zillertal, in Matrei in East Tyrol, above Bischofshofen, on the Carinthian Hochrindl and in the Pielachtal in the Mostviertel. All are self-catering, and we have looked at every one of them ourselves.

What you get

Renting an alpine hut or mountain cabin – what is different with us

On the big portals you find hundreds of huts in the Alps. We show a few – and we have stood in every one. Four things ours have in common.

01

Alpine hut or mountain cabin – what is the difference?

An alpine hut originally stood on a working alm and served the cattle and the dairymaids – like the Breitberg Alm on the Fügenberg or the Zarze at 1,880 m. A mountain cabin means, more generally, a house high up – like the Berghütte Artlieb above Bischofshofen or the Kochhäusl in the Tuxer Alps. In everyday use the words have long since grown together, which is why you find both on this page.

02

Self-catering: what to bring

Self-catering means the kitchen is there, the shopping is not. Take the first load of food with you – at several huts the nearest shop is a few kilometres away. At many places you can buy regional produce on the spot, and at some a breakfast can be arranged. What each hut provides is listed with it – a weekend works as well as a fortnight.

03

Rustic or comfortable – both exist

Two huts are old farmhouses: the Berghütte Artlieb at 420 years and the Oberbrixen Hütte at around 250 – rustic here means thick walls, a tiled stove and wood that has been dry for generations. Others are mountain cabins at today’s standard: the Kochhäusl with its own sauna, the Pietschacher Almhütte with a sauna and the piste behind the house, the houses in Bischofshofen with a sauna barrel and a hot pot. Huts with a sauna and a chalet with a sauna sit side by side with us.

04

A hut without electricity – simple on purpose

Three of our huts manage entirely without a mains connection: the Waldhüttl by the Karwendel with a small solar island, the Zarze Almhütte with photovoltaics and a shower, and the Abenteurer-Hütte on the Geißenberg with candles and a wood stove. In the hut finder you find them through the filter for huts without electricity. That is a decision, not a gap – and the reason some guests come back to exactly those.

Regions

Renting mountain cabins in Austria – in five mountain regions

Our huts stand in four federal states and cover the whole span: from 12 m² for two to 120 m² for twelve, from the Karwendel to the Hohe Tauern. Renting a mountain cabin in Austria therefore does not mean the same thing everywhere – the landscape, the altitude and the access road differ from region to region.

Seven huts in Tyrol

Waldhüttl · Tiroler Hütte · Grafenhäusl · Alpenrehblick · Kochhäusl · Breitberg Alm

By the Karwendel nature park stand the Waldhüttl and the Tiroler Hütte for two, the Alpenrehblick for seven and the Grafenhäusl for twelve – Innsbruck half an hour away. On the Wattenberg in the Tuxer Alps the Kochhäusl sits on its own with a sauna, and on the Fügenberg above the Zillertal the Breitberg Alm at 1,100 metres for ten.

A little hut for two

The Waldhüttl, the Tiroler Hütte and the Abenteurer-Hütte were built for exactly two – a wood stove, candlelight or a hot tub, depending on the hut. The Kochhäusl in the Tuxer Alps takes two to three people.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions about alpine huts

Can you rent an alpine hut?

Yes – with us you rent the whole hut for yourselves, on a self-catering basis. You enquire through the hut you like, the booking runs through urlaubshuetten.com, and we stay your point of contact before, during and after your stay.

Where can I rent an alpine hut for 2 people?

By the Karwendel in the Waldhüttl and the Tiroler Hütte, and in the Mostviertel in the Abenteurer-Hütte on the Geißenberg – all three for exactly two. The Kochhäusl in the Tuxer Alps takes two to three people, the Zarze Almhütte in East Tyrol four.

Is there an alpine hut with a sauna?

Yes: the Kochhäusl in the Tuxer Alps and the Pietschacher Almhütte on the Hochrindl have their own sauna, and so does the Alpenrehblick by the Karwendel. The Berghütte Artlieb and the Oberbrixen Hütte in Bischofshofen have a sauna barrel and a hot pot in the garden – you find them all on our page on the hut with a sauna.

Which hut suits a larger group?

The Grafenhäusl by the Karwendel nature park takes twelve people, the Breitberg Alm in the Zillertal ten, the Pietschacher Almhütte eight. If you want more of a house than a hut, look among our holiday houses.

Are the huts bookable in winter too?

Most of them are – with ski areas nearby and the piste behind the house on the Hochrindl. A few huts high up are summer huts from spring to autumn, the Zarze and the Abenteurer-Hütte for example – that is noted with each hut. What the winter approach looks like we tell you before you book.

What does a mountain cabin cost?

A hut is let as a whole, not per person. The prices are shown at each hut and depend on the season, the number of people and the length of your stay; firewood, the final cleaning and the local tax come on top depending on the hut.

Which hut suits you?

Tell us how many of you are coming, when you have time and how simple it may be – a wood stove and candles, a sauna and a hot pot, or a walk up on foot. We know every hut personally and will tell you honestly which one fits.
