Renting a mountain cabin, renting an alpine hut – what is different with us

Anyone wanting to rent an alpine hut in Austria will find hundreds of entries on the big portals. We have five. In return, we have been inside each one and we know what the access road looks like in winter and whether the water comes from the mains or from a well.

Our huts are in the Tux Alps, at the Karwendel, in Matrei in East Tyrol and twice in the Mostviertel in the Pielachtal. All of them are self-catering huts, all bookable all year round. Renting a mountain hut means with us: for the length of your stay, the house belongs to you alone.

What is the difference between an alpine hut and a mountain hut?

An alpine hut (Almhütte) originally stood on a working alpine pasture and served the cattle and the dairymaids. A mountain hut (Berghütte) means, more generally, a house at altitude. In everyday usage the two terms are now largely interchangeable – which is why you will find both on this page.

Altitude and secluded locations

The highest is the Zarze Almhuette in Matrei in East Tyrol at 1,880 metres, a self-catering house for four people. Ten of our places are marked as secluded – meaning: no neighbouring house in sight, no through traffic.

The Kochhaeusl at the Wattenberg in the Tux Alps is also in a secluded location and has its own sauna. The Waldhuettl at the Karwendel range is intended for two people, as is the Abenteurer-Huette at the Geissenberg in the Pielachtal.

Self-catering: what you should bring

Self-catering hut means: kitchen provided, shopping not. Anyone arriving in winter should bring the first load of food along – at several huts the nearest shop is a few kilometres away. At nine of our places regional products are available directly on site, at nine others breakfast is possible.

Hut without electricity

Three of our places manage entirely without a mains connection. Anyone looking for that will find them in the hut finder via the filter "Huts without electricity". That is not a shortcoming but a decision – and the reason why some guests come back to exactly those places.

Frequently asked questions about alpine huts and mountain huts

Can you rent an alpine hut in winter as well?

Yes, all five are bookable all year round. For the huts at altitude it is best to clarify the access with the host beforehand.

Are dogs allowed in the hut?

At the mill hut at the private pond in the Mostviertel, yes. In total, 14 of our places take dogs.

How many people fit into an alpine hut?

Our huts are small: the Waldhuettl and the Abenteurer-Huette for two people each, the Zarze Almhuette for four. Anyone needing more room will find it at our holiday houses.

Is there an alpine hut with a sauna?

Yes, the Kochhaeusl in the Tux Alps has its own sauna. Across all types of accommodation, eleven of our houses are marked with a sauna.

What does it cost to rent a mountain hut?

The price depends on the season, the number of people and the length of stay, and is shown directly at each hut.
