How your hut holiday succeeds

From planning to departure: nine honest tips that make your hut holiday a relaxed success – and keep the mountains as beautiful as you find them.

01Planning

Plan your holiday like a pro

Roughly plan your activities in advance and take a look at the weather forecast beforehand – that way you get the best out of every day and pack accordingly.

For bad-weather days: Playing cards, a book or board games make for cosy hut hours. In light rain, a short walk through the mystical mountain world is worthwhile – or you plan a wellness day or an indoor experience in the region.

02Amenities

Check the amenities of your hut

Read carefully what your hut offers and how it stands with location and accessibility. From the rustic hut entirely without electricity and running water to the chalet with sauna and hot pot, everything is included.

Clarify in advance: Do you need to bring bed linen and towels yourself? And how do you get to the hut in winter? A quick look saves surprises later.

03Provisions

Plan your provisions

Think up a rough meal plan for the first days and check whether your hut has a fridge or a freezer compartment. Pasta, rice, potatoes, dark bread, cheese and cured sausage keep well; for in between, nuts, dried fruit or a piece of chocolate.

Fresh from the farmer: Once or twice a week you go down to the valley or fetch fresh milk, eggs and vegetables directly from the farm. Tip: apples, carrots and other root vegetables keep for several days even without refrigeration.

04Packing

Pack cleverly

Pack for every kind of weather: good hiking boots, breathable clothing, a waterproof jacket and warm things like a hat, gloves and a fleece jumper – even in summer it gets cool in the evening. With the layering principle you stay warm and dry in any weather. Don’t forget hut shoes and a torch.

Cash & opening hours: In the mountains, card payment is rare – take enough cash with you. With serviced huts, check by phone in advance whether they are open; opening hours change often.

Marked hiking trail in the mountains
05Safety

Stay on safe paths

Marked trails are your friends – shortcuts can become dangerous. Good hiking boots, a (also digital) hiking map, a rucksack with enough provisions, a first-aid kit, a phone and rain protection are part of it. If a thunderstorm approaches, better turn back. And if you get lost: stay calm and alert the mountain rescue.

📞 In an emergency

  • 112 — European emergency number (throughout Europe)
  • 140 — Mountain rescue Austria
  • Alpine distress signal — a signal 6× per minute (calling, whistling, light signal), then a one-minute pause. Answer: 3× per minute.

06Nature

Protect the environment and resources

Use water, heating and electricity with care – especially in remote huts, every drop is precious. Stay on the marked trails and do not pick protected plants such as Alpine roses, edelweiss or gentian.

When foraging & with rubbish: Twist mushrooms out carefully instead of cutting them and – depending on the province – take at most 1–2 kg per person per day. You take your rubbish back down to the valley. That way you leave only your footprints in nature.

Farming life on the Alm
07Togetherness

Respect the mountain dwellers

On the farm and the Alm, milking early in the morning and in the evening is as much a part of life as working with machines and the hay harvest for winter. Enjoy the herb-scented meadows and immerse yourself in this natural rhythm.

Good to know: This work, as well as smells and the ringing of bells, is part of country life – and is not grounds for complaint.

08Enjoyment

Enjoy consciously

Switch off, breathe deeply and leave everyday life behind you – that is what you are here for. Deliberately put your phone aside and take time for the small things.

What makes the difference: Get up once for the sunrise, look up at a starry sky without light pollution in the evening, eat slowly and regionally, walk barefoot across the meadow – and treat yourself in between to the most beautiful mountain programme of all: simply doing nothing.

Swept, tidy hut
09Departure

Leave the hut with a good feeling

Leave your hut the way you would like to find it: tidy up, wash the dishes, everything back in its place. Empty the bins, switch off electrical appliances and clean the barbecue if you used it.

Why this counts: That way the beautiful memories of your mountain holiday stay not only with you but also with your host – and you will find the next hut in top form again.
