Breitberg Alm, Zillertal
A real alp on the Fügenberg with a tiled stove and a conservatory – room for the whole group.
See the hutRenting a mountain hut with us means: up on the mountain, but with a road to the door and hot water. 17 huts and lodges in Austria, from 890 to 1,880 metres, for two to ten people – many standing on their own, several with a sauna. We have visited every one of them ourselves. If you want it rougher, the real alpine huts are here.
Alpine meadow all around, real altitude, no neighbours. Three of our houses are that.

A self-catering hut on its own – deliberately simple, deliberately quiet, reachable by train.
See the hutIn German the two words get used interchangeably, and in English it gets worse: „mountain hut" can mean anything from a staffed refuge with bunk beds to a chalet with a hot tub. Here is how we use them.
An alpine hut stands on an alp, usually above 1,000 metres, with alpine meadow all around. It is often the working building of a farm, and getting there frequently involves a walk. Simple, quiet, and the closest thing to living up there for a week.
A mountain hut is on the mountain but lower down, normally reachable by car and better equipped – proper heating, a full kitchen, in several cases a sauna. Same view, less carrying.
What both have in common with us: you rent the whole house. We never let a hut to two parties at the same time, and there is no reception and no breakfast room.
If you want the walk and the altitude, read Staying in an alpine hut. If you would rather park at the door, this page is the right one.
Most of our houses are in Tyrol: the Waldhüttl and the Grafenhäusl in the Karwendel, the Alpenrehblick above Vomp, the Kochhäusl in the Tux Alps and the Breitberg Alm in the Zillertal. Innsbruck airport is under an hour from all of them. More on the region: Tyrol.
Two houses sleep ten: the Breitberg Alm in the Zillertal and the Grafenhäusl by the Karwendel Nature Park – both on their own, both with a table everyone fits around. For up to eight there is the Pietschacher Almhütte in Carinthia.
We have stood in every one of these 17 huts. We know how steep the drive is, how warm it gets in winter and whether the stove is hard work. Ask us – we answer from our own experience.
An alpine hut stands on an alp, usually above 1,000 metres, with alpine meadow around it and often a walk to reach it. A mountain hut is on the mountain but lower down, is normally reachable by car and is more comfortably equipped.
The Zarze Almhütte near Matrei in East Tyrol at 1,880 metres, inside the Hohe Tauern National Park. It sleeps up to four people, and the walk up is part of it.
Yes, two: the Breitberg Alm in the Zillertal at 1,100 m and the Grafenhäusl by the Karwendel Nature Park. Both sleep up to ten and both stand on their own.
Berghütte Artlieb and Oberbrixen Hütte in Salzburg, the Alpenrehblick and the Kochhäusl in Tyrol, and the Pietschacher Almhütte in Carinthia. Artlieb and Oberbrixen also have a hot tub.
It depends on the house. At the Zarze Almhütte at 1,880 m a walk up is part of the deal; most of the mountain huts can be reached by car. The details are on each property page.
At some of them. The Kochhäusl and the Abenteurer-Hütte are reachable by train, and the lodges in the Kleinwalsertal have a bus stop nearby. Ask us and we will tell you honestly which works well.
Tell us how many of you there are and how far you want to walk – we will sort out the rest by phone or email.
