The high valley behind Oberstdorf: 185 kilometres of walking trails, the Breitachklamm, cable cars and Walser villages between the Ifen and the Walmendinger Horn – our six lodges stand in Mittelberg at 1,100 metres.

The Kleinwalsertal – four villages, one high valley
Riezlern, Hirschegg, Mittelberg and Baad line up along thirteen kilometres of valley, surrounded by the Allgäu Alps. The valley can only be reached via Oberstdorf in Bavaria, which is what keeps it quiet. The Walserbus serves the villages on a regular clock, and the Kanzelwand, Walmendingerhorn and Ifen cable cars run in summer and in winter.

The Ifen, the Gottesacker plateau and the Breitachklamm
The Hoher Ifen with its tilted plateau shapes the head of the valley, and behind it lies the Gottesacker – a karst landscape of furrowed limestone, rare in the Alps. At the valley mouth the Breitachklamm cuts 150 metres deep into the rock; in winter icicles hang from its walls. 185 kilometres of walking trails link valleys, alps and summits.

Lake Constance, the Bregenzerwald and the Montafon
Vorarlberg reaches from Lake Constance to the Silvretta. In Bregenz the lake stage plays to 7,000 people in summer, the Bregenzerwald is known for its cheese road and its modern timber architecture, and the Montafon and the Arlberg around Lech for their mountains. The Silvretta high alpine road, one of the finest pass roads in the country, leads up to the reservoir.

Alpine dairies and Walser culture
On the alps cheese is still made daily in summer – Vorarlberg mountain cheese and alp cheese come out of the copper kettle, not a factory. The Walser people came over from the Valais in the 13th century and brought their language, their farms and their building style with them; the Walserhaus in Hirschegg tells that story. Many alps serve a small snack.

Kässpätzle, mountain cheese and shopping in the valley
Kässpätzle with roasted onions, Riebel for breakfast, alp cheese and farmhouse bread: Vorarlberg tastes hearty and simple. Riezlern and Hirschegg have grocery shops, a baker and a butcher, and there is direct sale at the alps. Since you cook for yourselves at the lodge, it is worth doing the first shop right after you arrive – then the holiday begins.

Holiday apartment, holiday house or hut?
Our six lodges in Mittelberg are holiday apartments in the Kleinwalsertal – with their own kitchen, bathroom and living room, built and furnished like a hut. They range from two to six people, each with at least one separate bedroom, a balcony or terrace and a view of the Ifen or the Widderstein. Holiday houses, alpine huts and chalets we arrange in our other regions.

Winter in the high valley
The Kanzelwand and the Fellhorn form a cross-border ski area with Oberstdorf, the Ifen is known for its wide slopes and the Walmendingerhorn for its view. All four villages have ski schools. Add cross-country loops through the valley, winter walking trails, toboggan runs and snowshoe tours – and the Walserbus takes you there with the guest ticket.

How to reach the Kleinwalsertal
TRAIN
To Oberstdorf, then the Walserbus
Railjet or night train to Bregenz, on via Immenstadt to Oberstdorf; from there Walserbus line 4 runs to Mittelberg and stops outside the lodge.
CAR
Via Oberstdorf in the Allgäu
The only road into the Kleinwalsertal starts in Oberstdorf. Winter tyres are required in winter, and the road is well cleared.
ON SITE
Walserbus and Allgäu-Walser-Pass
With the pass you ride the bus in the valley free of charge and, from May to November, the cable cars too – the whole valley works without a car.
