Rent a ski chalet in Austria – short ways to the piste

A ski chalet means, with us: a place from which the ski day begins without a long drive – the lift a few minutes away, a ski room at the building or the toboggan run in the village. Our ski and toboggan huts stand in Tyrol, in the Kleinwalsertal, above Bischofshofen and on the Carinthian Hochrindl. We have seen every one of them ourselves, and we know what the access road looks like in the snow.

Three ski huts we especially recommend today

Every day we show you three different places from our selection – from the lodge in the Kleinwalsertal with the cable cars included to the alm on the Hochrindl with the piste behind the house. Each card says what makes that place special. You will find all of them further down in the gallery and in the hut finder.

What you get

Renting a ski chalet in Austria – what makes one with us

A ski chalet is not a category of building but a question of where it stands and what is there when you come back in the evening. Four things our ski and toboggan huts have in common.

01

What the ski hut marking means

With every place we note whether it is suitable as a ski or toboggan hut. That means the ski area or the toboggan run is close enough for the day to start without a long drive – on the Hochrindl the piste runs behind the house, in the Kleinwalsertal the Walser bus stops outside the lodge and the cable cars are included, in Neustift the ski bus stops in the village and the ski room is at the building. Where the way is longer, we say so.

02

Warmth for afterwards

After a day on the piste the warmth counts. The Kochhäusl in the Tuxer Alps and the Pietschacher Almhütte on the Hochrindl have their own sauna, and so does the Alpenrehblick by the Karwendel. The two houses above Bischofshofen have a sauna barrel and a hot pot in the garden, and the chalets in Neustift a jacuzzi and a 100 m² spa in the main house. Almost everywhere there is a tiled stove or a wood stove as well.

03

Ski holidays for two or for a group

Ski chalets in Austria are often sold as places for large groups. With us both work: the Waldhüttl and the Tiroler Hütte by the Karwendel are built for exactly two, the Kochhäusl for two to three; the Breitberg Alm takes ten and the Grafenhäusl twelve, with several bedrooms and two bathrooms. You always rent the whole place, not a bed in it.

04

The access road in winter – described honestly

Snow changes the way to the door. With every place it says how you get there in winter: by car right up to it, with winter tyres and sometimes chains, or with the last stretch on foot. We have driven every one ourselves and tell you before you book – that way nobody stands in front of an unploughed track in the dark.

Regions

Ski and toboggan huts – in four regions

Our ski and toboggan huts lie in four regions of the Austrian Alps. Each of them skis differently: the Kleinwalsertal with cable cars included in the guest card, Tyrol with the ski areas around Innsbruck and in the Zillertal, the Pongau with the ski areas around Bischofshofen, and the Hochrindl in Carinthia with a small family ski area right behind the house.

Widderstein · Ifen · Hammerspitze · Elferkopf · Zwölferkopf · Bärenkopf

At around 1,100 metres behind Riezlern, the six Walser lodges have the Walser bus and the cable cars included in the guest card – the way to the lift is short and you do not need the car for it. Between 70 and 80 m² for four to six people, and cross-country tracks and winter walking paths start in the village.

From the places by the Karwendel and on the Wattenberg the ski areas around Innsbruck are half an hour away; the Breitberg Alm on the Fügenberg has the Hochzillertal just below it, and from Neustift it is a short drive to the Stubai glacier and the Schlick 2000. The ski bus stops in the village, and the ski room is at the building.

Above Bischofshofen stand two old houses on their own, both with a sauna barrel and a hot pot in the garden and the ski areas of the Pongau outside the door. On the Carinthian Hochrindl the Pietschacher Almhütte has the family ski area right behind the house – skiing from the front door, and the Turracher Höhe about thirty kilometres away.

Families

Short distances with children

The lodges in the Kleinwalsertal have the bus and the cable cars included, and on the Hochrindl the family ski area lies right behind the house. Child-friendly places are marked as such – with honest notes on stairs and the access road.

Friends and groups

One house, one evening

The Breitberg Alm takes ten, the Grafenhäusl twelve, the Pietschacher Almhütte eight – several bedrooms, one table for everyone and a drying room for wet gear. During the day everyone skis their own way, in the evening the group sits together again.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions about a ski chalet in Austria

What makes a place a ski hut with you?

That the ski area or the toboggan run is close enough for the day to start without a long drive. We mark it with each place, and where the way is longer we say so rather than leaving it out.

Which place has the piste directly behind the house?

The Pietschacher Almhütte on the Carinthian Hochrindl: a small family ski area with groomed pistes lies right behind it, so you can ski from the front door.

Are the cable cars included anywhere?

In the Kleinwalsertal: the six Walser lodges come with the guest card, which includes the Walser bus and the cable cars. You do not need the car to get to the lift.

Is there a ski chalet with a sauna?

Yes: the Kochhäusl in the Tuxer Alps and the Pietschacher Almhütte have their own sauna, the Alpenrehblick by the Karwendel too. The two houses in Bischofshofen have a sauna barrel and a hot pot in the garden, and the chalets in Neustift a spa in the main house – more on our page on the hut with a sauna.

What is the access road like in winter?

That differs from place to place: at most of them you drive right to the door, some need winter tyres and occasionally chains, and at a few the last stretch is on foot. We have driven every one ourselves and tell you before you book.

Can I rent a ski chalet with a dog?

At several of our places the dog is welcome, including in winter. Which ones is shown by the hut finder through the filter for dogs, and by our page on holidays with a dog.

Which ski hut suits you?

Tell us how many of you are coming, which ski area you have in mind and whether a sauna, a short way to the lift or quiet in the evening matters more. We know every place personally and will tell you honestly which one fits.
