Silence has a way of changing you. Not loudly, not suddenly – but lastingly. You park your car at the farm in Schwarzenbach an der Pielach, shoulder your rucksack and set off. 3.5 kilometres, 300 metres of ascent, an hour and a half through the forest. What begins at the bottom as a sporting climb becomes a meditation with every step. Twigs crack, a raven calls, at some point you hear yourself think. When you arrive at the top, everyday life is already gone. What remains is mountain air, the view and the quiet feeling that this is exactly right.
If you prefer it more sporting, you can also come up by mountain bike or e-bike. You can charge your e-bike down at the farm at your host's – up here there is no electricity.
The hut itself is twelve square metres of wood, one room, one chimney. A wide upholstered corner bench is at the same time your bed – two woollen blankets, two sleeping mats are ready. A small kitchenette, a wood stove for cooking and heating, a few pots, a milk churn with water. A hatch in the floor: your natural refrigerator, cool even in high summer. There is no electricity and no running water either. Instead: candles that bathe the hut in golden light in the evening, a solar shower under the open sky and a pit toilet a few steps away.
In the natural food shop in Schwarzenbach you stock up before the climb – fresh bread, regional specialities, everything you need for a few days up top. What you can carry comes along. It does not take more.
The hut can be booked from the end of May to the beginning of November. In spring, when the mountain meadows are in bloom. In summer, when the alpine cattle graze and you walk barefoot through tall grass. In September, when the stags bellow at dusk. In October, when the larches burn golden. Four moods, one hut – each one is worth its own journey.
This is not a makeshift solution. This is the idea.
After days in absolute quiet you return strengthened – with new energy and clarity that carries for a long time.
