What is Tyrol known for?

What makes Tyrol special

Tyrol is a land of high mountains, alpine pastures and clear lakes. Between the valleys lie historic towns, mountain villages, castles, mines and many smaller places worth a visit. In summer you go hiking, cycling or swimming. In winter, skiing, tobogganing and winter walking are part of it.

After a day outside, an inn, an alpine hut or your own kitchen is waiting: with Kaiserschmarrn, bacon dumplings, Tiroler Gröstl, Schlutzkrapfen and a Brettljause platter.

Farming in Tyrol

Tyrol has more managed alpine pastures than any other Austrian province – and almost every path up there is maintained by someone who is paid to do it.

Good to know for your Tyrol holiday

Which holiday region in Tyrol suits us?

Silberregion Karwendel for mountains, culture and a bathing lake close together, Hall-Wattens for the old town and the Crystal Worlds, the Alpbachtal for family-friendly mountains and Lake Reintalersee, the Zillertal for cable cars and high alpine days, the Stubai Valley for the glacier, waterfalls and high-altitude trails – and East Tyrol for the quiet side of Tyrol.

Where are there huts near a lake?

Around Lake Reintalersee in the Alpbachtal, at the Weißlahn bathing lake in the Silberregion Karwendel, and within a day trip of Lake Achensee. For every place to stay the distance is stated honestly.

Which Tyrolean dishes should you try?

Kaiserschmarrn, bacon dumplings, Tiroler Gröstl, Schlutzkrapfen and Kasspatzln – plus a Brettljause platter with bacon and cheese from the farm shop.

Which regions are good for families?

Silberregion Karwendel (Wolfsklamm gorge, silver mine, bathing lake), Hall-Wattens (Crystal Worlds, the mint town) and the Alpbachtal (family-friendly mountains, Lake Reintalersee).

Can I travel to Tyrol without a car?
