What a ski chalet means with us
A ski chalet in Austria is, with us, not a bed in a hotel with a ski room. It is a whole house or a whole apartment that belongs to you for the length of your stay – self-catering, with your own kitchen – and a host who lives nearby and answers the phone. 20 of our 28 places are marked as ski and toboggan huts. They are spread over four federal states: Tyrol, Vorarlberg, the Salzburg region and Carinthia.
Where our winter places are
Six of them are the Walser Lodges in the Kleinwalsertal in Vorarlberg, named after the mountains around them – Ifen, Widderstein, Hammerspitze, Elferkopf, Zwoelferkopf and Baerenkopf. In Tyrol you will find them at the Karwendel range, in Gnadenwald, at the Riedhof in Breitenbach am Inn, in the Zillertal and in the Tux Alps. The Oberbrixen Huette is in Bischofshofen in the Salzburg region, the Pietschacher Almhuette on the Hochrindl in Carinthia.
Tobogganing
The same marking covers toboggan huts. Anyone who prefers a wooden sledge to a lift pass will find the places over the filter "Ski hut & toboggan hut" in the hut finder. Ask us about the nearest run – we know which one is lit in the evening and where the sledges can be borrowed, and that is the sort of thing no portal page can tell you.
Getting there in winter
For the houses at altitude it is worth asking the host before you travel whether winter tyres are enough or whether chains are needed. We say this honestly because we have driven every access road ourselves. 22 of our places can also be reached by train and bus.
Sauna and hot tub after the day on the snow
Eleven of our places have a sauna, three more a hot pot or whirlpool. The Tiroler Huette at the Karwendel has an open-air whirlpool for two, the Kochhaeusl in the Tux Alps its own sauna in a secluded position.
Frequently asked questions about ski chalets in Austria
Are the ski chalets self-catering?
Yes. Every one of them has its own kitchen. You are not booking half board, you are booking the house.
How many ski chalets do you have?
20 of our 28 places are marked as ski and toboggan huts. Three of them are chalets in the narrower sense, the others are cabins, holiday houses and apartments.
Are they bookable over Christmas and New Year?
All of them let all year round. For Christmas and New Year we recommend asking early – those two weeks are the ones that go first.
Can I bring a dog to a ski chalet?
14 of our places take dogs. The hut finder shows which ones over the filter "Dogs allowed".
Is there a ski chalet with a hot tub?
Yes – the Tiroler Huette at the Karwendel range. Two more of our places have a hot pot: the Berghuette Artlieb and the Oberbrixen Huette in Bischofshofen. They are all on our page hut with a hot tub.
What does a ski chalet in Austria cost?
The price depends on the season, the number of people and the length of stay, and is shown directly at each place. Winter weeks around the turn of the year are the most expensive of the year.
